Sunset Cruises to Pea Patch Island @ Fort Delaware / Delafort Ferry

Setting sail from the Delaware City Waterfront, we will head out on the river to take in close views of Fort Delaware and the herons coming and going from Pea Patch Island, where hundreds of Great Blues, Little Blues, and egrets nest. Of course we’ll also keep an eye open out for Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Double-crested Cormorants, and other birds moving up and down the river.

These Cruises are timed to end at sunset (check below for departure times), so that visitors can enjoy the scene and also grab some food and have a drink at the fine local establishments in Delaware City.

Weekly Thursday Night Heron Watch @ Delaware City Waterfront

LBHEEvery Thursday night, April through July, join the ABA birding host Jimmy Warren and take in the gathering dusk together on the Delaware City Waterfront. Each night hundreds of herons (Great Blues, Little Blues, egrets, and others) pass right by and over town, as they wing their way back to Pea Patch Island. Joining a ABA Heron Watch is a great way to bone up on your flying Heron id skills as well as enjoy the company of new and old friends. Pea Patch Island is famous as the home of Fort Delaware, but for more than a century has also been one of the country’s largest heronries, hosting thousands of nesting herons. Every afternoon, in the waning daylight hours there is a steady procession of these elegant waders moving along the river. Who knows what surprises the winds will bring! Come join us to take in the spectacle and grab a beer or some food in town before or after. 

Limit: The more the merrier!
