Greater Yellowlegs

Shorebird numbers swell in August to a fever pitch. Starting in July adults are arrive on their southbound migration, and after the first week of August juveniles abound as well. The shrill piping calls Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs punctuate wetlands and marshy mudflats, while the soft mutterings of Short-billed Dowitchers are also a regular feature. Conditions change every year, depending on the water levels favored by the birds, so we will wait and see where the large flocks develop and gather there to see if we can see 15 or more different kinds of shorebirds.
